Harvey's always been a fairly easy baby, but lately he's decided he doesn't like drinking from a bottle anymore. Has anyone tried feeding a baby milk from a spoon? It's impossible, I tell you. Normally I wouldn't be that concerned since I subscribe to the notion that your baby knows when he's hungry and when he's full. I listen to his signals and stop when he refuses to eat anymore. This results in a happy Mama and a happy baby since there are no struggles over feeding. At his last pediatrician appointment, however, he actually lost weight from his 6 month appointment 3 months ago, so we were all a bit concerned. He's growing normally, though, and everything else is on track except for his weight, which is in the <5 percentile.
Now, does that look like a skinny baby to you? I didn't think so. Do you think those weight charts they use include Asian babies? Harvey's happy and very active, so my main concern is really making sure he doesn't get dehydrated. Oh, and as per his pediatrician's advice, we've been giving him more calorie-rich foods by adding butter and maple syrup to his oatmeal. He's down to 2 bottles from his previous 4, and more than half of that is mixed into his solids, so aside from dehydration, I'm also concerned that he's not getting all the nutrients he needs.
It goes against my instincts to feed him all this fatty stuff (butter cookies anyone?), so I would love to hear any suggestions on how to make a baby eat/drink more!
In the meantime, he's gained a pound on the butter and maple syrup diet, so maybe it's not too bad...
Gilly was on corn syrup mixed with her formula when she was 3mos old. Maybe butter and maple syrup ain't that advisable. I've always controlled Gilly's sugar intake. She's 4 now and has no desire for candy, soda, ice cream, etc. Her teeth are nice.
ReplyDeleteInteresting subject!
ReplyDeleteWell, I went to the theater a few weeks ago. We never gave Alice a baby bottle. Alice knows how to use a sippy cup (with our help) so my husband gave her milk directly in a sippy cut and it worked very well. It also works with a regular glass if I guide it in her mouth. Maybe you could try that!?!
Yeah, good luck with the spoon + milk ;)
About the food. My friend's baby is in your situation. However, it was never question of butter and maple syrup! They suggested Greek yogurt (Alice loves it like crazy), avocado, soft tofu mix with fruits (also a favorite in our house)...you know, that kind of stuff.
Are you sure that the scale was working properly? It happened to us...not a joke! Your baby looks super healthy and happy!
Anyway, Happy Holidays xox
I don't think it includes Asian babies. The charts here also show that my son is small and light but put him in any playground, preschool, kiddie party and he towers over and outweighs almost all the kids his age.
ReplyDeleteSo I figured, like you, that as long as the baby's happy and healthy, he's fine!
Plus, kids really lose weight around the 8-10 months phase. They're active--all that crawling, standing up, etc. Just you wait when Harvey starts walking and running! Food is the last thing on his mind!
ReplyDeleteMy twin boys didn't lose weight around 9mo but they've been on the small side since they were born and they always sit below 5%. Our pedi said well..not many asian babies can hit the 75% or more. But hey they are healthy, been walking since 10.5-11 mo old and very active. So I think you shouldn't worry. Harvey looks absolutely fine to me :-)
